Chapter Seventeen

Rodric

We both arrived back in the village cold, tired, and wet. The other Alphas and the betas ran up to me. And Anja's people ran up to her.

They drilled us. Got our stories. At times, Anja's people even thought she was dead.

"My mother. Father." She looked around frantically. "Where are they?"

An older woman placed her arm around Anja. "Oh, dear. They thought you were in trouble when they couldn't find you at her cousin's. They're out looking for you."

Anxiety ripped through me the moment it attacked her.

"When did they leave?" Anja asked.

"Just this morning. They went west. That way." The old lady pointed in the direction we had just come from.

"Oh no," Anja panted, and looked up at me. "I have to find them. They could be in trouble. Stuck out in the snow. Buried in it."

I pressed my palm to her back. "We'll find them. The hike back didn't look as bad."

"I have to go back."

"No, you have to stay here. It's not safe."

"He's right." The old lady nodded. "Marlana wouldn't want you to risk your life. They said they'll be back. Stay put. Look at you. You're a wreck. You have to get warmed up. I have some soup. Come."

When the lady tried to tug Anja, she clasped onto my forearm. "I appreciate your kindness, Sandra, but I need to stay with Rodric."

The old lady tossed me a nasty look. "But Anja, he's an Alpha." She said the word as if me being who I was disgusted with her.

"He is. He saved my life. He's been...kind to me. I'm sure you think otherwise with the way his people came here and caused so much trouble."

"Yeah! And we caused the trouble for good reason," Torstein shot back while standing behind me.

The old lady frowned. "You all didn't have to terrorize us like that."

"Yeah, well...let's see what the people you stole from have to say about that. Many of them are probably freezing in their homes with scraps to eat. I—"

I held up my palm, stopping Torstein from further arguing with the woman. "No more. I need a status."

"We found our shit. Our truck is bogged down in the snow. As soon as we get her out, we're going to pile everything up and head out. We had a vote last night. I'm staying with those people until winter is over, just in case more thieves try to try something. The betas obviously dropped the ball."

I nodded. "Fair enough."

"Some of these people are nice enough. Forgave us for how we came off in the beginning. They lent us two cabins to keep warm in the meantime. And we've been chopping a lot of wood for them since they hadn't a scrap of it in their barn. That old leader of theirs is in hiding, but if he knows what's coming for him, he'll stay in hiding. Come, brother. We have a lot to discuss."

Omegas were always possessive of their Alphas and Anja had not released my forearm yet. She squeezed tighter and closed the gap between us, fitting her small frame against my side.
